Learning Something New Everyday
As a kid, we had a dinner time ritual where my dad asked us what we learned in school that day. At the time I found answering that question the hardest part of my day….and the most irritating. [I could have taught a class in eye rolling.] As a kid it was hard for me to grasp that what I was learning in school was ‘new & exciting‘ information (to anyone). I was just going through the motions, and paid little attention to the big picture.
But I’ve always been very fascinated with the world around me and how it works. And becoming an adult, I have recognized the value of this dinner time ritual. I became aware of the different ways a person can learn something new about the world around them. It was one of those AHA moments when I realized that learning something new didn’t have to be something I read in a book in a classroom.

So I’d like to share some of the places I like to go to learn new things.
- TED Talks : Ted talks are amazing. Ted talks are 10-30 minute lectures by scientists, comedians, lecturers, intellectuals, professors, religious leaders (and more) recorded at the TED conference each year. From it’s website, “TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader.” When you want to hear about the amazing things that people in our world are researching and DOING….check out TED. OH, and you can watch TED Talks on Netflix now, which is kind of cool too…
- RSA Animate: You really have to see these, they are animated lectures.
- How Stuff Works: They have some neat podcasts, like Stuff You Should Know, Stuff You Missed in History Class and Stuff Mom Never Told You (When I used to spend long hours in the car to and from work, I’d load my ipod up with these podcasts and do something productive [i.e. learn] while sitting in gridlock).
- National Geographic: I always loved the National Geographic magazines as a kid. Partly because I am a photographer and partly because the articles were well written and full of really interesting information.
And because I’m a tech nerd, er, work on a computer all day, I really like:
A while ago, here at GCS we started an initiative to provide interesting information to our employees every day. [One of our core values as a company is to LEARN.] So we started a Daily News article that my co-worker, Laura, stuffs with great information every day.
There’s a word of the day, this day in history, a sales tip, a joke of the day, and sometimes outrageous factoids from OMG Facts.
